Moonshine Mullin out of West Virginia Governor's Cup

Trainer Randy Morse made the trip from Louisville to Mountaineer Park on Friday but he only brought one of the two horses he entered on Saturday’s West Virginia Derby card.

Morse will be running No Distinction in the $100,000 West Virginia Chairman’s Cup at Mountaineer but he left his Grade 1 winner Moonshine Mullin behind in Louisville. Moonshine Mullin would have been a heavy favorite in Saturday’s $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Cup.

“He has a bit of an issue and I just decided to pass the race,” Morse said from Mountaineer on Friday evening. “I just wouldn’t have been comfortable running him. I was not sure he wasn't coming until this morning; we just decided not to put him on the van. I’m not sure if he will miss any training time right now.”

The news of Moonshine Mullin’s impending scratch was first reported on Twitter by HRTV host Scott Hazelton.

Moonshine Mullin, a $40,000 claim by Morse at Remington Park last November, has won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster and Grade 2 Alysheba in his last two starts.
