Moomtaaz overtakes longshot

Moomtaaz rallied past 35-1 longshot Pegylation near the wire and captured Monday's $50,000 Liberty Bell Stakes at Philadelphia Park.

It was the second stakes victory this season for Moomtaaz, a 3-year-old colt trained by Brian Brennan, who is now 5 for 11 lifetime on turf. He covered 1 1/16 miles over a course rated good in 1:45.26.

Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, Moomtaaz was allowed to settle in toward the back of the pack while saving as much ground as possible. Guided outside, but still unhurried, Moomtaaz ($9.20) began to pick off horses down the backstretch before swinging four wide and in the clear turning for home.

In the final sixteenth, Moomtaaz got the lead from Pegylation, whose only career victory came last October at The Meadowlands, and won by three-quarters of a length. Pegylation outfinished the 7-5 favorite, Mr. Numbers, for second, completing a $221.40 exacta.
