Montero fits off big drop

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Montero should get a nice setup in the featured seventh race for $12,500 claimers at Hastings on Saturday. The 6 1/2-furlong sprint for fillies and mares drew seven horses.

Trained by Barbara Heads, Montero is coming off of a dull effort going 1 1/16 miles in an optional $25,000 claiming race won by Mizz Shakin on Sept. 13. All three of her wins this year have come in sprints, however, and with plenty of speed in the field she figures to get a nice trip from off the pace. Prior to her disappointing effort as the favorite in her latest race, Montero got up just in time to defeat Smokin Danielle going 6 1/2 furlongs in a $25,000 claiming race on Aug. 28.

Wild n' Wicca won't mind an honest pace to work with and she is coming right back for the same price and distance after edging Yoorock Gal by a head on Sept. 26 for her second straight win.

Yoorock Gal was the 4-5 favorite when Wild n' Wicca beat her in her latest race. She could make amends from a stalking position.

Infinite Wealth would probably have won the Wild n' Wicca race with a clean trip. She was forced wide around the stretch turn and still only lost by a half-length.
