Montalvo suspended two weeks

Jockey Carlos Montalvo was handed a two-week suspension by Prairie Meadows stewards after he pulled up Spring Training in the shadow of the wire in the fourth race on Memorial Day. Spring Training appeared to be comfortably on his way to his third straight victory when Montalvo began to ease his mount four strides before the wire. Lusk, who was closing on the outside, was up to win by a nose as Montalvo continued to apply the brakes.

The Prairie Meadows board of stewards issued the ruling, which stated that Montalvo was suspended for failure to ride to the wire. Montalvo, who said he believed Spring Training was starting to prop, intends to appeal.

* Maya's Storm, who was scratched from the Gray's Lake Stakes on Memorial Day, will be pointed to the June 7 Prairie Mile. A spokesman for the Roll ReRoll Stable said the 3-year-old Iowa-bred is using the Mile as a prep for the Juneo27 Iowa Derby during Prairie's Festival of Racing. With Maya's Storm never having raced beyond six furlongs, the Mile offers an opportunity for him to try two turns.
