Monsoon Rain seeks three-peat in Wheat City

Monsoon Rain, winner of the last two editions of the $30,000 Wheat City, will be looking to extend that streak at Assiniboia Downs on Friday evening.

Trained last year by Chad Torevell, Monsoon Rain went off form after capturing the one-mile Wheat City. But, after finishing fifth when making his first start of 2010 in the six-furlong Free Press, Monsoon Rain was a game winner of the 7 1/2-furlong allowance prep for the Wheat City for trainer Tanya Lindsay.

Juan Crawford, who has ridden Monsoon Rain in each of his starts this season, will be back aboard the 8-year-old gelding when he faces six rivals on Friday night.

Precursor, a recent private purchase by owner Terry Hamilton, will be making his first local start in the Wheat City for new trainer Clay Brinson.

A 4-year-colt sired by A.P. Indy, Precursor was a $500,000 yearling purchase but has failed to live up to that lofty price tag on the racetrack.

Precursor has earned $156,540, however, and became a stakes winner in the $66,250 Proud Truth at Aqueduct late last October.

Rohan Singh has the mount aboard Precursor, who can make his presence felt in this spot despite his lackluster recent form.

Wooden Ya Know It, who ran a seasonal winning streak to three in the Free Press, is the high weight at 124 pounds.

Beaten a neck last time out as the 7-5 favorite in the allowance prep, Wooden Ya Know It will be looking to redeem himself under rider Janine Stianson.

Double Shuffle, a three-length winner in his first start locally under second-level allowance terms at the one-mile distance, also deserves consideration here.

Claimed for $17,500 last summer at Northlands Park, Double Shuffle got a couple of starts under his belt at Turf Paradise this spring and has trainer Robertino Diodoro and jockey Vicky Baze in his corner.

Vindgari, Celtic Thane, and Grow Up complete the field.

Vingari was beaten just a length as the fourth-place finisher in the Wheat City prep and will have Gary Baze in the irons.
