Monmouth: Yes He's the Man best

Yes He's The Man, and jockey Eddie Castro, race to victory in the $60,000 Select Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Yes He's the Man was indeed the man at Monmouth Park, winning the Select Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths.

But yes, Yes He's the Man had some help. First, when Glitternmeporridge and Rainbow Inthestorm were scratched from the Select, the race had only four horses. And Put Back the Shu, second choice in the wagering, did a face plant leaving the starting gate and after a quarter-mile trailed the early leader, Carvajal, by five lengths.

Carvajal had been sent to the front at the start, and jockey Eddie Castro let heavily favored Yes He's the Man run at his own pace. Yes He's the Man stalked Carvajal through an opening quarter-mile in 22.35 seconds, and when Castro said "go" on the far turn, that was about that. Yes He's the Man quickly opened a clear lead past the quarter pole, and though he apparently failed to switch leads in the stretch, no one ever got close to him. Put Back the Shu rallied well for second after the poor start. Carvajal held third, followed by Zurvan.

Yes He's the Man, shipped to Monmouth from Florida by trainer Dave Braddy, got 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.85 and paid $2.40 to win and $2.10 to place. There was no show wagering on the Select. Yes He's the Man earned $36,000 of the total $58,200 purse.
