OCEANPORT, N.J. - Sabercat swept past the dueling pacesetters on his way to a six-length victory Sunday in the $75,000 Garden State Stakes for 2-year-olds at Monmouth Park. Jockey Angel Serpa perfectly positioned Sabercat third as Angel’s Tune and Purely Determined engaged in a prolonged battle for the lead. Once roused, Sabercat angled to the outside and blew by to earn a second straight win in his stakes debut. “My horse had speed, but there was a lot of speed in there,” Serpa said. “I was told to sit just off the pace and come with one run and that’s exactly what I did.  He opened up in the stretch, and did the whole thing pretty easily.” Trained by Steve Asmussen, Sabercat is now 2 for 2 since stretching out on the main track. Sabercat paid $3.60 to win as he ran the mile and 70 yards in 1:41.94 on the track labeled good. Angel’s Tune held on for second, a neck better than Purely Determined. Clip the Coupons was fourth, followed by Slammin’ Slew and Yes He Did.
