Monmouth: Rip Roarin Ritchie uncatchable in Tyro

Elvis Trujillo rides Rip Roarin Ritchie to a half-length victory in the Tyro for 2-year-olds at Monmouth Park.

Rip Roarin Ritchie, heavily favored on the basis of a fast maiden win in mid-June at Churchill Downs, shot to the lead and withstood stretch threats from I’m Boundtoscore and Itsmyluckyday to capture  the $60,000 Tyro Stakes for 2-year-olds  at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

Breaking sharply from the rail under Elvis Trujillo, Rip Roarin Ritchie ($3.60) quickly opened a three-length lead. Rip Roarin Ritchie was still comfortably a length in front coming into the stretch, but I’m Boundtoscore, coming off a win in the Chenery at Colonial Downs, and Itsmyluckyday, making his turf debut, applied pressure in the final sixteenth.

Rip Roarin Ritchie hung on by a half-length, completing the five furlongs over firm turf in 56.46 seconds. I’m Boundtoscore outgamed Itsmyluckyday by a neck to get second.

Trained by Wesley Ward  for owner Richard Ravin,  Rip Roarin Ritchie is now 2 for 3 with earnings of $70,645.

“He broke really fast out of the gate,” Trujillo said.  “The gates opened and he was three lengths in front already.  He relaxed really well, but I had to ride him a little in the stretch because he started looking around.”
