Monmouth: Redaspen takes Politely


Redaspen ($17.80) trailed early, rallied four wide at the quarter pole, and pulled away in the stretch to win Sunday's $60,000 Politely for fillies and mares at one mile on the turf at Monmouth Park.

Trained by Tim Wooley and ridden by Victor Molina, Redaspen won by 1 3/4 lengths over 28-1 longshot A Different Tune. Somethinaboutbetty, the even-money favorite trained by Todd Pletcher, was outfinished and ended up another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Redaspen, who finished third in her only other start this year in the $60,000 Dahlia at Laurel Park, covered the distance in 1:34.24. It was the the first victory for Redaspen, a 5-year-old Bianconi mare, since the $65,000 Navajo Princess at the Meadlowands in November. She is owned by Equivine Farm.

In the Open Mind Handicap, Jersey Gia ($17.40) came from four lengths back in the stretch to beat pacesetting favorite Pure Disco by a neck in the $60,000 stakes for New Jersey-bred fillies and mares 3oyears old and up. Ridden by Daniel Centeno and trained by Peter Kazamias, the 6-year-old Jersey Gia was timed in 1:09.10 for the six furlongs.
