Monmouth Park: Tiger Cat Lilly makes it three straight

Email

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Tiger Cat Lilly stretched her winning streak to three on Saturday with a 1 3/4-length win over Cofachiqui in the $66,100 Crank It Up Stakes for 3-year-old filly sprinters on the turf at Monmouth Park.

Following heavy rain in the area on Friday evening, the Crank It Up was the only one of four carded turf races to remain on the grass.  The course was rated good as they ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.16.

For Tiger Cat Lilly, this was her stakes debut. Trained in Maryland at the Fair Hills Center by Michael Pino, Tiger Cat Lilly posted her maiden win at Woodbine over the synthetic surface before switching back to grass for a first-level win at Monmouth.

From the rail in the Crank It Up with Chris DeCarlo aboard, she broke sharply to engage Holiday for Kitten in a speed duel.

"My instructions were to sit a length off the lead," DeCarlo said. "She broke so sharp there was no sense in me taking away what came easy."

Those two were clear of the pack until deep stretch when Tiger Cat Lilly started to draw clear as an 8-1 winner.

Cofachiqui, 29-1, rallied to get second after trailing the six-horse field, edging Holiday for Kitten by a head.
