Monmouth Park: Take Charge Indy eyes Monmouth Cup

Take Charge Indy, who won the Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs in May, might run next in the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup on July 28.

Take Charge Indy could make his next start in the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup on the July 28 Haskell undercard after having his second breeze at Churchill following a 20-length defeat in the June 15 Stephen Foster.

With exercise rider John Byrne up, Take Charge Indy went five furlongs Friday in 1:02.80. The 4-year-old colt is booked on a Tuesday charter into Stewart International Airport near Newburgh, N.Y., and would be vanned south to Monmouth Park.

“We’ve got the weekend to decide, but we’re leaning toward Monmouth,” trainer Pat Byrne said. “We’re looking at the Foster as a toss-out race after his big effort in the Alysheba,” which he won by six lengths. “Sometimes you just have to move on. The colt has come back just fine and has trained right along since the Foster. There is no physical excuse we can find.”

Byrne said Gary Stevens will have the mount if Take Charge Indy runs in the $200,000 Monmouth Cup, which goes at 1 1/16 miles. His jockey for his last three starts, Rosie Napravnik, has committed to Mark Valeski in the same race.
