Monmouth: First stakes for Servis

Email

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Tempest Fugit ($3.80) gave rookie trainer Jason Servis his first win of the Monmouth meet and his first career stakes win in the off-the-turf $100,000 Oceanport Handicap.

Tempest Fugit, a 5-year-old gelding, was claimed for $75,000 two starts back by owner Dennis Drazin and has returned instant dividends for his connections. He ran second in the $50,000 Frisk Me Now Stakes behind Sea of Tranquility in his last start May 26. Tempest Fugit was entered as a dirt-only starter in the Oceanport, and torrential rains Thursday evening and all of Friday reduced the field to three.

Tempest Fugit was timed for the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.72 over a muddy track. Runspastum was second, 8 1/4 lengths ahead of One Eyed Joker.

The Oceanport held a Grade 3 billing, but since the race was moved off the turf, it loses it grade until the Graded Stakes Committee reviews it and decides whether to restore the grade.

* Willie's Luv ($3.80), trained by Jamie Woodington, went wire to wire to capture the $50,000 Santo Lalomia Handicap by 6 1/2 lengths.
