Monmouth: Farno takes Tyro

Email

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Farno entered the $50,000 Tyro Stakes for 2-year-olds on Saturday as a maiden and left as a stakes winner.

Farno had solid runner-up finishes in the two quickest juvenile races of the meet behind Wildcat Heir and Valid Video, but those two passed on the Tyro.

Trained by Frank Generazio and owned by Patricia Generazio, Farno broke slowly from the gate and closed from off the pace for the first time in his career. Down Play dueled three wide with entrymate Jet Love and 6-5 favorite Blackjack Boy throughout the backstretch. Down Play took command turning for home with Farno rallying four wide after the leaders.

Farno continued to come to Down Play down the stretch, and was up in the final stride to win by a head. Max a Million was third. Farno ($6.60), a son of Tactical Advantage, covered the 5 1/2-furlong distance of the Tyro over a fast track in 1:05.01.

* Lunar Bounty ($7.40) captured the $50,000 Anderson Fowler Stakes in his first career turf start for trainer Ronnie Werner. He led gate to wire under Eddie Martin Jr. in the five-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds, crossing the wire in 55.98 seconds to win by three-quarters of a length over B K Dodger.
