Colony Club pulls a $54.40 upset under Geovany Garcia in the Klassy Briefcase at Monmouth Park.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Colony Club, the longest price in the field at 26-1, reeled in even-money favorite Inspired to win the $61,600 Klassy Briefcase Stakes for filly and mare turf sprinters on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

A 6-year-old owned and trained by Alexandra White, Colony Club picked up her first victory since the 2011 edition of the Fort Monmouth Stakes. She got it with a change of tactics, running right behind the leader instead of dropping far off the pace.

As expected, Inspired shot right to front, looking to duplicate her pacesetting victory last month in the Fort Monmouth.
And for most of the race, Inspired seemed destined to secure a second straight stakes here. In deep stretch, Colony Club surged past by a neck to pull the upset.

Geovany Garcia was aboard as Colony Club covered the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02.52 over the firm course, paying $54.40 to win.

“She really likes firm turf and that’s what she got today,” White said. “She was on her toes in the paddock and I knew she’d be pretty close today. She’s a classy horse and she was able to run down that other filly.”

Inspired barely held onto second, edging out Sounds of the City by a nose.

Dove Season was fourth followed by Mosaicist, Witchesofwestfield, My Due Process and Bounding Bi.
