Stopshoppingmaria and Judy the Beauty, who closed their 2-year-old campaigns by running second in graded stakes, make their first starts of 2012 in the $60,000 Crank It Up at Monmouth Park. A 5 1/2-furlong turf stakes, the Crank It Up has a field of six 3-year-old fillies. Based in New York with trainer Todd Pletcher, Stopshoppingmaria has been off since she set the pace and begrudingly gave way to Stephanies Kitten in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last November. Pletcher does not have a good record with long layoff types returning in turf sprints, going 2 for 24 (8 percent) the last five years. Likewise, Judy the Beauty has been off since her runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Spinaway on Saratoga’s main track on Labor Day weekend. In her only previous try on grass, Judy the Beauty won an allowance sprint in France. Her trainer, Wesley Ward, is 2 for 29 (7 percent) with long layoff types returning in a turf sprint. Among those who have raced recently, Sensible Lady comes off a 24-1 upset of The Very One at Pimlico. Jazzy Idea, two lengths behind Sensible Lady as the runner-up, is also entered. Quick Flip, a daughter of Speightstown out of a Bates Motel mare, has the pedigree to run well on turf. She flashed high speed winning the Sandpiper at Tampa Bay Downs and in the early stages of the Grade 3 Old Hat at Gulfstream Park.
