'Monet' best in Group 2 French race

Mister Monet continued his rapid rise up the ranks of Europe's 3-year-olds with a commanding victory in the Group 2, $130,000 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville on Saturday.

Trained in Yorkshire, England, by Mark Johnston and ridden by Joe Fanning, Mister Monet was sent off the 9-5 favorite in a field reduced to nine by the scratch of the American-owned Electrocutionist.

Untroubled by turf rated as "heavy" following a very wet last 10 days, the Irish-bred Mister Monet made all the running and, drawing clear in the last quarter-mile, came home four lengths ahead of Delfos. The time for 1 1/4 miles was 2:14.40.

The victory took Mister Monet's record to 5 wins from 7 starts. Johnston will now aim him at the Group 1 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 16.
