Monday stakes recaps (5/30/05)

* Jockey Scott Spieth swept both turf stakes on the holiday card at Mountaineer. Spieth coaxed Kaylan's Rose ($11.20) to a come-from-behind head victory over pacesetter Beau Watch in the $75,000 Decoration Day Handicap for fillies and mares. A race later, Spieth helped Package Store ($11.20) hold off Gunning For by a half-length in the $75,000 Memorial Day Handicap.

* Norm's Nephew ($4.40) put away three pace rivals with a sizzling half-mile in 43.40, then coasted to a five-length victory in Monday's $50,000 Pepsi-Cola Handicap for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.

* What About David ($14.80) rallied after being headed near the sixteenth pole and gamely prevailed in a four-horse photo to take Monday's $20,900 Big Red Mile Handicap at Lincoln.
