Monashee scores in British Columbia Breeders' Cup Oaks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Monashee, under a brilliant ride by apprentice Justin Stein, scored a mild upset in the Grade 3 $178,137 British Columbia Breeders' Cup Oaks at Hastings Sunday.

Breaking alertly from the rail, Monashee led for the first quarter-mile, but when Virtuous Lady and Avenging Kat forced the issue heading into the second turn, Stein eased Monashee back to fifth. Hugging the rail the whole way, Monashee regained the lead at the quarter-pole and after repelling a bid by the 2-1 favorite, A Classic Life, she drew off to a convincing 3-length victory over Queenledo. A Classic Life held on to finish third.

For second year trainer Tracy McCarthy, it was her first win in a graded stakes.

"What a great ride Justin gave her," said McCarthy. "He rode her with a lot of confidence."

Monashee paid $14.90 and earned $110,040 for her owner, Ole Neilsen of Canmor Farms. Monashee was a $14,000 yearling purchase and has now earned $166,020.

Kevin Krigger, who rode A Classic Life, said "I had a perfect trip but she just got a little tired."

Final time for the mile and an eighth over a track labeled good was 1:50.84.
