Mohawk: Surface switch helps 'Beck'

Win With Beck would have been among the outsiders had the $150,000 gone as scheduled on the turf. But when early-morning rain moved the 1 1/8-mile Mohawk to the main track, Win With Beck suddenly became the 8-5 favorite, and he proved more than up to the task when rallying to an easy six-length victory over his uncoupled stablemate, Continental Reins.

Win With Beck lagged near the back of the pack for the opening six furlongs of the Mohawk, rallied six wide while readily picking up rivals around the turn, and easily overtook pacesetter Chestertown Slew nearing the furlong marker to win going away. Continental Reins attempted to rally just inside his stablemate leaving the final turn but proved no match while narrowly edging Chestertown Slew for second.

Win With Beck covered the distance in 1:51.22 over a sloppy track and paid $5.30.

"It doesn't get much better than that," said Jimmy Jerkens, who trains Win With Beck for owner Stewart Hoffman. "At this time of year you can get crazy weather. That's what happened, and it worked out."
