Royalty For Life and driver Brian Sears are all alone at the wire.

Royalty For Life continued his dominance in the three-year-old trotting colt division drawing away from nine rivals to capture the $686,000 Canadian Trotting Classic in a stakes-equaling mark of 1:52 2/5.

Royalty For Life joined a host of leavers and hustled to the front at the quarter in a :27 1/5 clocking. From that point driver Brian Sears was able to waltz to the half without pressure reaching that station in :56 1/5.

Sears made no mistakes hitting the gas pedal during the third quarter (:27 3/5) and gaining separation from the field as pocket-sitter Corky struggled to keep pace and the uncovered Punxsutawney labored as well on the rim. The move proved a winning one for Sears and severely compromised the closers as Smilin Eli and Master Of Law both tried to rally from the back but couldn’t gain on the winner.

Eventually it was Your So Vain, one of last week’s elimination winners, that closed powerfully to get the place spot while 80-1 shot All Laid Out and driver Yannick Gingras benefited from a ground-saving trip and rallied late for the show spot.

Sent off as the even money choice, Royalty For Life scored for the sixth time in 11 starts as a three-year-old for winning trainer George Ducharme.

“He was a touch sick last week,” said Ducharme. “I had confidence he’d give a good showing tonight.”

Indeed Royalty For Life bounced back in a big way from his second place finish in the elimination and driver Sears could tell the difference. “He was really on his game tonight,” said Sears, “I wanted to go to the front and I thought Jody’s horse (Toocool Forschool) would leave and he did. I let Dave (Miller behind Corky) go by then moved to the front.”

Royalty For Life upped his career bankroll to $1,560,231.
