Mohawk: Pembroke Heat Wave goes uncovered to win Armbro Flight final

Pembroke Heat Wave came first over into slow fractions and wore down the leaders in the C$376,000 Armbro Flight final for trotting mares.

Frenchfrysnvinegar gunned to the front and rated kind opening fractions of :27 2/5 and :57 4/5. Shortly after, Pembroke Heat Wave came to call and gave the leader all she could handle, with Cedar Dove hot on her heels. The dueling leaders passed the three quarters in 1:26 2/5.

Pembroke Heat Wave edged clear in the stretch and held off a late challenge from Cedar Dove and China Pearls to score in 1:54.

“I didn’t go in with any set game plan,” said driver Brian Sears. “I thought she’d be strong enough to go first over and she got it done.”

The 6-year-old Pembroke Heat Wave, who is trained by Greg McNair, scored her 21st career win in the final. With the win, she pushed her career earnings over $400,000 for owner William Varney of Bangor, Maine.
