Mohawk: North America Cup elimination fields set

Derick Giwner
Captaintreacherous heads three eliminations for the North America Cup

Twenty-one horses dropped in the box for the 30th edition of the North America Cup eliminations to be contested Saturday, June 8 at Mohawk Racetrack. While the talent is spread out over three 7-horse fields, each elimination race has a clear horse that most fans and bettors will be watching closely.

He may not be the Kentucky Derby winner, but Captaintreacherous, who headlines the first elimination, is as close as it gets to a household name in the Standardbred game. The Tony Alagna-trained 3-year-old won his only start of the year, a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes race on May 19 at Pocono Downs. He trained in tandem with stable-mate Mel Mara on June 1 at the Meadowlands in a reported sub 1:49 mile to prepare for his Cup elimination. Sunshine Beach, an easy 1:49 2/5 Somebeachsomewhere winner last week, looks like the Captain’s main foe starting one spot to his right in post 6.

Following a gutsy win in last Saturday’s $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final at the Meadowlands, Rockin Amadeus is sure to garner attention at the windows. The Breeders Crown winner of his division as a 2-year-old at Woodbine, starts from post 4 with regular driver Yannick Gingras in the bike in elimination two. His main competitor could turn out to be Wake Up Peter. A runner-up in the Crown last year, Wake Up Peter finished third, beaten only one length in the NJSS Final despite a tough uncovered trip.

Those watching last week’s Somebeachsomewhere, a major prep for the N.A. Cup, were treated to a sizzling 1:48 3/5 victory by Vegas Vacation. The Casie Coleman trainee drew the rail in elimination three. Unbeaten in trio of starts this year, Vegas Vacation will look to extend that streak with Scott Zeron in the bike. Johny Rock, who lost a neck to Rockin Amadeus last week, and Odds On Equuleus, who was a disappointing sixth in his SBSW split, look like Vegas Vacation’s biggest threats.

The top three finishers in the North America Cup eliminations and a fourth-place finisher drawn by lot are eligible to start in the $1,000,000 Final.

The North America Cup eliminations are slated as races 3, 7 and 9 on the 13-race card at Mohawk.

Two eliminations for the Goodtimes for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters will be contested as races 1 and . Each 7-horse elimination will be reduced down to the top five finishers to compete in next week’s Final.

The Fan Hanover elimination (race 6) for sophomore filly pacers starts with 10 hopefuls. Nine will make the Final on June 15. Jerseylicious accepted a bye.

First race post time on Saturday is 7:25 pm.
