Maxus overcame a tough post draw to win his William Wellwood Memorial elimination

Maxus and Alarm Detector handed the favorite a defeat in their respective C$30,000 William Wellwood Memorial eliminations for 2-year-old colt trotters on Monday night at Mohawk Racetrack.

Samo Different Day (Jimmy Takter), the runner-up in the Peter Haughton Memorial on Hambletonian Day, was the public choice in the first elimination, and when Takter stole a 31 3/5 second quarter to get to the half in just 59 3/5, it looked like it was going to be tough to beat him.

A 1:27 4/5 three-quarters followed that soft half, but in the stretch Samo Different Day tired and lugged out, giving ample room for Takter stable-mate Maxus (Yannick Gingras) to shoot a gap and get up for a 1 3/4 length decision in 1:56 2/5, a career-best clocking.  Sweet Talkin Hall (James MacDonald), a 48-1 shot, rallied from seventh at three-quarters to finish second, and he was followed by Kinda Lucky Lindy (Scott Zeron), Cruising In Style (Jason Bartlett), and Samo Different Day.

"I got away fourth and when Anthony pulled I was in the three-hole," relayed Gingras.  "Around the last turn I was a little worried I was going to get through, but when his horse made a break obviously everything opened up in front of me. He's a nice horse, but he's had a lot of bad luck.  Last week in the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final I got away third, and at the five-eighths I was half-in and half-out and decided to sit in and it was the wrong move.  I think he would have won, but I got shuffled back.  He had plenty of trot finishing, so I knew he was sharp.  He had a good trip tonight and it worked out."

Takter trains Maxus, a Muscle Hill colt, for owners Christina Takter and Brixton Medical Inc.  Maxus picked up his second win from eight starts in his rookie campaign, and he pushed his earnings to C$92,325.  Bred by Nicholas Cimino, Maxus is out of the Enjoy Lavec mare Gerri's Joy ($641,905), making him a three-quarter brother to the exported Smilin Eli (Muscles Yankee, $753,278).  Sent off at 6-1, Maxus paid $14.30 to win.

Gingras and Takter went for the sweep in the next elimination with favored You Know You Do, the Haughton Memorial champion, but he was handed a defeat by first-over 5-2 second choice Alarm Detector (Trevor Henry) in a 1:54 4/5 lifetime-best mile.

Lawmaker (Anthony MacDonald) chopped out the 28 2/5 opening quarter, but Gingras sent You Know You Do first-over out of third in the backstretch, and he reached the top right at the 58 2/5 half.  Alarm Detector was positioned third after You Know You Do cleared, and Henry would put him on the rim on the final bend, and Alarm Detector would take a half-length lead on the outside at the 1:27 1/5 three-quarters.

Alarm Detector cleared You Know You Do for good early in the stretch drive, and Alarm Detector would go on to prevail by a length and three-quarters.  You Know You Do wound up second, Lawmaker was third, Clive Bigsby (Bartlett) came in fourth, and Union Jack (MacDonald) collected fifth.

"He's got a beautiful gait, he's quick, and he loves to do it," explained victorious trainer Ben Baillargeon.  "He wants to race, and when you bring him up here at night he puts his game face on.  He raced pretty good tonight.  A mile in 54, he came first-up, and they were trotting.  I hope he'll get a little bit better, but right now he's pretty good."

The victorious Chapter Seven colt is trained by Baillargeon for owners Tom Rankin, Elizabeth Rankin, Claude Hamel, and Santo Vena.  Alarm Detector has five victories and a second-place finish from six trips behind the gate, and he has now banked C$76,870.  Bred by Order By Stable, Alarm Detector was a $110,000 Standardbred Horse Sale purchase and is out of the Yankee Glide mare Final Countdown, a full sister to Ken Warkentin ($902,355) and Holiday Road ($426,200).  Alarm Detector returned $7.30 to win.
