Intimidate (3) got his nose up on the wire.

On a night where the Mohawk surface was drenched in rain, Sebastian K tasted defeat for the first time in North America when Intimidate got up in the final strides to nail the 1/5 favorite in the $603,000 Maple Leaf final for older trotters.

Modern Family charged off the gate with Ron Pierce and secured the lead well before the 26 4/5 opening quarter. After sitting the pocket for a short spell, Sebastian K was on the move for trainer/driver Ake Svanstedt and assumed command. He led past the half in 57 3/5 and began to take on pressure from a first-over Flanagan Memory approaching the 1:26 4/5 third quarter call.

In the lane Svanstedt went to the whip and tried to dig down deep but Intimidate slowly edged closer with every stride to win by the slimmest of margins in 1:54 2/5. Second-choice Market Share elected to sit the three-hole and finished very well late for third but ran out of track.

“I had a lot of confidence in my horse. He hasn’t been 100 percent this year but Lou (Blais, trainer) did a great job,” said winning driver Sylvain Filion. “I knew he was going to kick home but I didn’t know if he would go by Sebastian K,” he continued.

Intimidate paid $96.50 to win for owners Determination and Judith Farrow.

In a bit of sad news, Modern Family, who finished fourth, reportedly collapsed in the paddock after the race and passed away.

Seriously, Mohawk is a great track for closers. I have been toMohawk on rainy evenings and the front end pace collapses. Sebastian K is no different. How anyone can say Sebastian will be dominated this year is simply blind to the facts. This horse can leave fast and come home fast..........Mohawk however is a different kind of track where speed is extremely suspect to fading in the last eighth........especially on a sloppy track. Intimidate had a great night and kudos to Blais and Filion for the win...........if the horse was 100% sound he would be a beast in my opinion.

Pierce should not have gunned Modern Family like that, and he also didn't know how to drive Intimidate, who has always possessed an all-time great late closing kick. Intimidate was finally driven in his preferred style and got a ridiculous pace meltdown that Pierce caused.

I agree that Filion drives and knows Intimidate the best but come on that was by far a pace meltdown that was crawl of a 2nd quarter and Sebastian K excuse was he was beat by a better Trotter! Market Share too will beat Sebastian this year.. That 45-1 was crazy he should of been 12-1

No clue? I picked intimidate to win in earlier post....both him and market share are better trotters and I'll predict that Sebastian will not win any future race with one of those in it...

Intimidate proven over the last 2 years as the best trotter when 100% what a gift 45-1 was!!! Svanstedt is terrible driver too plus that second quarter stroll in park gives him absolute no excuse...All this talk Sebastian K best came way to soon...so he clocked some fast times on tracks that where biased and where 10K claimers go 1.48+....I predict in the next few months Market Share and Intimidate and even the Madness to beat him over and over!!
