Intimidate (3) got his nose up on the wire.

On a night where the Mohawk surface was drenched in rain, Sebastian K tasted defeat for the first time in North America when Intimidate got up in the final strides to nail the 1/5 favorite in the $603,000 Maple Leaf final for older trotters.

Modern Family charged off the gate with Ron Pierce and secured the lead well before the 26 4/5 opening quarter. After sitting the pocket for a short spell, Sebastian K was on the move for trainer/driver Ake Svanstedt and assumed command. He led past the half in 57 3/5 and began to take on pressure from a first-over Flanagan Memory approaching the 1:26 4/5 third quarter call.

In the lane Svanstedt went to the whip and tried to dig down deep but Intimidate slowly edged closer with every stride to win by the slimmest of margins in 1:54 2/5. Second-choice Market Share elected to sit the three-hole and finished very well late for third but ran out of track.

“I had a lot of confidence in my horse. He hasn’t been 100 percent this year but Lou (Blais, trainer) did a great job,” said winning driver Sylvain Filion. “I knew he was going to kick home but I didn’t know if he would go by Sebastian K,” he continued.

Intimidate paid $96.50 to win for owners Determination and Judith Farrow.

In a bit of sad news, Modern Family, who finished fourth, reportedly collapsed in the paddock after the race and passed away.
