Modesty Handicap preview

Pace makes the race, and Potra Clasica may be allowed to steal away to an easy early lead in the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap at Arlington on Saturday. A gate-to-wire winner of the Hollywood Wildcat Breeders' Cup Handicap at Calder in April, Potra Clasica earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure that day while besting two next-out winners. Last time out, Potra Clasica sat a nice ground-saving trip for most of the way, but had to alter course twice when the leader drifted in front of her in the stretch. She was put up by the stewards, and will enter the Modesty with a hat trick in mind. The only other horse that trainer Martin Wolfson shipped to Arlington in the last five years was Aeneas, the 31-1 runner-up in the Grade 2 Washington Park Handicap in 2003. Potra Clasica should be prominent when the field turns for home, and may offer value at 6-1 on the morning line.

Royal Copenhagen earned an 86 Beyer Speed Figure in the race preceding her Grade 3 Pucker Up victory over this surface last year. She received an 86 Beyer Speed Figure in her last start at Santa Anita on April 22, 2006, and will ship in looking for another graded stakes score on Saturday. Royal Copenhagen runs well fresh, but the late-running filly may need a bit more pace to attack. Entry mate Round Heels has only raced twice since September 29, 2004, and has a tendency to be rank in the early portion of her races. She may be sent after Potra Clasica in the hopes of setting the race up for Royal Copenhagen.

Louve Royale has a potent stretch kick, and is one of a plethora of high-class turf distaffers in the Patrick Biancone barn. She owns very competitive Beyer Speed Figures, and should be charging hard in the lane.

Cursora is a multiple Group 1 winner in her native Argentina, but she bled in her first stateside start. She'll receive Lasix for the first time in the Modesty.
