Mobil scores in Plate Trial

Michael Burns
Mobil ($3.60) wins by 1 1/2 lengths in Saturday's $162,200 Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Mobil mowed down Rock Again at the sixteenth pole en route to a daylight victory in Saturday's $162,200 , an important prep for the June 22 Queen's Plate at Woodbine.

Mobil, under Todd Kabel, dueled up front with Sonofawac through fractions of 23.66 seconds for a quarter-mile, 47.36 for a half-mile, and 1:12.14 for six furlongs in the nine-furlong race. Rock Again stalked the pace under Eibar Coa, and made a three-wide bid on the far turn.

Rock Again opened up a clear lead at the head of the stretch, but appeared to loaf a little, and Mobil kicked in to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths.

Peef finished another nine lengths back in third in the six-horse field of Canadian-bred 3-year-olds. The final time, over a wet-fast track, was 1:51.84.

"I knew I had a lot of horse underneath me," Kabel said. "When I asked him at the three-sixteenths pole, he fired and chewed up [Rock Again] like nothing."

Mobil, who is trained by Mike Keogh, returned $3.60 and banked $97,320 for owner Gustav Schickedanz.

* Favored Hour of Justice ($4.50) notched her first stakes win in Saturday's supporting feature, the $110,000 Alywow Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. With Jim McAleney aboard, Hour of Justice covered 6 1/2 furlongs over yielding turf in 1:17.37.
