Mizzen Mast fee bumped to $15,000 after Breeders' Cup success
Email
Juddmonte Farms stallion Mizzen Mast, sire of two Grade 1 winners at the Breeders’ Cup, will have his stud fee raised to $15,000 for the 2013 breeding season.
The 14-year-old by Cozzene was the only sire with two Grade 1 winners at this year’s Breeders’ Cup, represented by Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Flotilla and Turf Sprint winner Mizdirection. Mizzen Mast ranks 12th on the North American turf sire list. Mizzen Mast was bred and raced by Juddmonte Farm, winning the Grade 1 Malibu while trained by Bobby Frankel, and began his stud career at Juddmonte in 2003.
First Defence, 15th on the North American freshman sire list, will stand for $7,500, the same fee as this year, at the Lexington, Ky., farm. First Defence is the sire of highly regarded English Group 3 winner Dundonnell.
An 8-year-old by Unbridled’s Song, First Defence won 6 of 14 starts and earned $580,534, winningthe Grade 1 Forego Handicap. He is out of the Grade 1-winning Seattle Slew mare Honest Lady, who is out of Broodmare of the YearToussaud.

Mizzen Mast's girls have done him proud. Both Flotilla and Mizdirection (who beat the boys to win her race) were impressive in the Breeders' Cup. Not surprised he will now be in greater demand and his fee has been raised.
