DEL MAR, Calif. – Mike Smith’s first mount of the day on Sunday went a lot smoother than his last mount on Saturday, as he guided favored Miss Sunset to a dominating victory at Del Mar in the $150,690 Fleet Treat Stakes for 3-year-old California-bred fillies. The Fleet Treat is at seven furlongs, a sprint like the Grade 1 Bing Crosby, the six-furlong race in which Smith was dumped by Drefong on Saturday at the point where the clubhouse turn joins the backstretch. “Don’t think I didn’t think about that crossing that gap,” Smith said. Miss Sunset ($3.60) smoothly crossed that portion, volleyed with Dreamy Gal for the early lead, put away that rival entering the lane and drew clear for a 5 1/2-length score over Queen Bee to You, who closed from last to beat Dreamy Gal by a neck for second. All of a Sudden was fourth and was followed, in order, by Alpenhorn, Lady Espionage, Please Do, and Isa Firecracker. Miss Sunset completed seven furlongs in 1:24.34 following fractions of 22.55 seconds, :45.47, and 1:10.92. Miss Sunset, a daughter of Into Mischief, has now won five times in nine starts. She is 3 for 3 at Del Mar, where last summer she won a maiden race and the Generous Portion, both for Cal-breds. Jeff Bonde trains Miss Sunset for Alan Klein, her co-breeder, and Phil Lebherz.
