ARCADIA, Calif. – Miss Southern Miss and Metaboss are recovering from injuries that forced them out of the Breeders’ Cup.

Miss Southern Miss, who missed Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf because of a sore shin, will undergo X-rays next week to determine how long she will be sidelined. Trainer Keith Desormeaux said Miss Southern Miss likely will miss 30 to 45 days of training.

Owned by Pete Cantrell, Miss Southern Miss won the Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 10.

Metaboss, scratched from Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf after being pulled up with a sesamoid injury in a turf gallop Wednesday, will not need surgery, trainer Phil D’Amato said on Friday. Metaboss has remained at D’Amato’s stable and has been retired, he said.

“He’s very comfortable,” D’Amato said. “It will take time to mend.”

Metaboss was second in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap in August and fourth in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship here on Oct. 2. A 4-year-old colt by Street Boss, Metaboss won 3 of 12 starts and earned $300,420.
