Miss Serendipity in career form for Rodeo Drive

Benoit & Associates
Miss Serendipity comes off a victory in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon at Del Mar.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Miss Serendipity went from a troubled sixth-place finish behind Moulin de Mougin in the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 10 to winning the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap there Sept. 1.

The Yellow Ribbon was the perfect way for Miss Serendipity to end her summer campaign and prepare for an autumn season that begins in Saturday’s $300,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita.

DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 3 Moulin de Mougin. Trainer Richard Mandella is 26-2-4-5 with a $0.42 ROI over the past five years in graded stakes turf routes at Santa Anita. Click for more details. Mike Hogan

The Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes is a prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf here Nov. 1, a race firmly on the mind of Ron McAnally, the trainer of Miss Serendipity. McAnally even considered waiting for the Breeders’ Cup with Miss Serendipity.

“That would have meant waiting two months to go a mile and a quarter,” McAnally said. “I thought that was too long of spacing.”

The winner of the Rodeo Drive receives a fees-paid berth to the BC Filly and Mare Turf through the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program. In the Rodeo Drive, Miss Serendipity is part of a field of 14 fillies and mares.

Miss Serendipity (Last 3 Beyers: 97-87-97)

◗ Miss Serendipity raced in traffic in the Mabee Stakes and rallied wide through the stretch of the Yellow Ribbon to win her second stakes of 2014.

◗ She won the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes by a nose over Emollient here in May.

◗ McAnally said a clear trip is vital for Miss Serendipity’s chances under jockey Brice Blanc.

“He knows how to ride the horse,” McAnally said. “She stayed out of trouble last time. Brice got her in the clear, and that’s her number.”

Parranda (Last 3 Beyers: 94-88-87)

◗ Parranda had a wide trip in the Yellow Ribbon and was beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Miss Serendipity as the 9-5 favorite.

◗ She won two graded stakes at a mile on turf here earlier this year.

◗ Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Parranda was second in the Omnibus Stakes over 1 3/8 miles on turf at Monmouth Park in August 2013, the longest race of her career.

Moulin de Mougin (Last 3 Beyers: 94-82-86)

◗ Moulin de Mougin will race at 1 1/4 miles for the first time in the Rodeo Drive.

◗ A 4-year-old filly, Moulin de Mougin has won twice at 1 1/8 miles at Del Mar, with the Mabee her career highlight.

◗ “Mine is just working her way up,” trainer Richard Mandella said. “Her race at Del Mar was terrific. I think she might prefer longer distances.”

Unzip Me Stakes

Alexis Tangier, Moulin de Mougin’s 3-year-old half-sister, makes her stakes debut in Saturday’s $75,000 Unzip Me Stakes for 3-year-old fillies over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course.
