Miss Matched wires

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Miss Matched, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, notched her first stakes victory Saturday when leading every step of the way in the Grade 3, $162,900 at Churchill Downs.

Owned by John Oxley and trained by John T. Ward Jr., Miss Matched returned $16.80 as the second-longest shot in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies. Culinary, the 2-1 favorite, finished second, 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner and another 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Caroline's Gold. Runway Model, the 2-1 second choice, bolted leaving the final turn and finished far back in last.

Miss Matched, purchased privately after a sensational debut at Monmouth Park last July, finished 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.49 over a fast track. The victory was her third in a row, following a Gulfstream Park allowance and an overnight handicap at Arlington Park.

Kota and Steal the Show were early scratches.

The Churchill stakes win was the first for Bridgmohan, the current leading rider at Arlington.

One race earlier, Singit ($18), ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., overcame a slow start when overtaking favored Nicole's Dream to win the $69,150 Excitable Lady by a half-length. Singit, trained by Hal Wiggins, finished five furlongs in 57.31 seconds over a good turf course.

* The Steve Asmussen-trained horses in Barn 38 were cleared from quarantine restrictions Saturday for the purposes of racing and everyday training, although three Asmussen horses that had previously been isolated once again tested positive for the equine herpes virus. Those horses eventually will be moved off the grounds to a separate quarantine facility, Churchill officials said.

* Saint Liam has been assigned high weight of 121 pounds for the $750,000 Stephen Foster Handicap on Saturday. Badge of Silver is pegged second at 119.
