Track announcer Frank Mirahmadi

Frank Mirahmadi was named by Santa Anita on Monday as the announcer for the first part of its winter-spring meeting, which begins Dec. 26.

Mirahmadi and Michael Wrona, currently at Golden Gate Fields, will be the primary announcers at Santa Anita during its upcoming meeting following the sudden retirement of Trevor Denman after 33 years as Santa Anita’s announcer.

Mirahmadi will call Dec. 26 through Jan. 3, then Wrona will take over Jan. 7-24. After that, according to a press release, they will alternate every three weeks, with Mirahmadi calling at Golden Gate while Wrona is at Santa Anita. The schedule finds Mirahmadi calling the Santa Anita Handicap on March 12 and Wrona the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

Though Mirahmadi and Wrona are the two top candidates to permanently replace Denman, Santa Anita last week said it would conduct a “worldwide search” for a replacement. Several other potential candidates also will call races during the meet.

What about Bobby Newman the former Calder announcer and Mark Johnson who was at Churchill. Those are classy announcers!!!!

For a number of years, we had the pleasure of experiencing Michael Wrona's teriffic race calling at Lone Star Park. It took me several years to adjust to his absence!! He's extremely professional, has the ability to accurately call large fields and is never at a loss for clever lines. Although we would hate to lose him at Lone Star Park, my second choice is John Lies. For a number of years, Lies has shared his knowledge of the sport by serving as a host/analyst at Del Mar. His smooth voice is a pleasure to hear. Santa Anita could do FAR, FAR worse than selecting either of these two gentlemen.!

I think Mirahmadi shines in the big events, and hopefully will prove it. Wrona may be accurate, but has got to have one of the most irritating voices out there. If this sport has any hope of attracting new fans (not very likely), having a voice like Wrona's to listen to won't be a plus. Frank can do it if he ups his game a bit and stays on the serious side.

So what is the actual story behind Trevor's retirement? Why did he suddenly decide to retire only a few weeks before the start of the meeting?

Several other potential candidates also will call races during the meet. Uh I thought this only happend in the typical corporate world...I like Wrona better but really, Frank left Oaklawn for a position that he will split with Wrona and than they both will be scratched while "several other candidates" call races. Sounds like HR at Taco Bell.

wow.... do we have a war on her hands???? Jay Privman9 hours ago This is a straight news story gleaned from a Santa Anita press release, I don't choose the photos not their size (that's done by editors in NY), and I didn't write a feature on Mirahmadi "a few days ago". In fact, this is the only reporting I've done on this subject. victor stauffer5 hours ago He's telling the truth. In fact 90% or more of his work is "gleaned" from press releases.
