Mirahmadi will sub at Santa Anita for Denman during vacation

Email

ARCADIA, Calif.- Frank Mirahmadi will replace Trevor Denman as Santa Anita’s announcer for two weeks in June, the track announced in a statement on Saturday.

Mirahmadi, 46, will describe the action for 10 racing days, from June 12 through June 27. Denman, 61, will call at Santa Anita through June 8, and return for the final weekend of the current spring-summer meeting, June 27-28.

Denman, the South African native who has been Santa Anita’s announcer since October 1983, will also call the races at the Del Mar summer meeting, which runs from July 17 to Sept. 3.

Mirahmadi , a native of Los Angeles, is the announcer at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and on the northern California fair circuit. In addition, he is a commentator on the TVG racing network.

Denman plans a June vacation to a 110-acre farm he owns in southern Minnesota with his wife, Robin.

Find a guy from New York, everyone is sick of the Trevor Den sound. Harry Hanson was the best.

Trevor has changed race calling for the WORST. Its truly a shame that veteran callers started emulating his style. Trevor blabs too much with editorial comments during his call and when he is wrong he makes up an excuse call such as ...."but so and so has exploded down along the rail ...when the truth is he missed the horse all along. I was at SA for the 83 Morvich Handicap when Trevor made this tragic call (and obviously learned ZERO from it) "And Sandy Hawley and Shanekite have the Morvich Handicap in the bag" At the time they were 3 to 4 lengths in front, BUT Kangaroo Court and Joey Steinner nailed them by a nose on the line. Its not the caller's job nor will it EVER be to tell us who is going to win OR who is moving like a winner. I suggest some of you listen to Harry Henson's race calls or Chic Hernandez. Those were the guys who called correctly, not all this other blabbing.

You guys are in for a treat, I just hope he does his Rodney Dangerfield impression in the middle of a race, it is classic. Wish I had taped one of them at his Oaklawn calls. He is a great guy as well as being an ace race caller! Just a classic and we need more like him.

I sense "madness" in this rant. Matthew, if by chance your travels take you to MN, please give me 24 hour notice, so I may leave the state.

Frank is an absolute solon of a race caller, clear, precise, knowledgeable. When a jock falls, and a horse goes down, he has no reservation about keeping all of us who are "not at the track" apprised of the situation. Keeping all of us informed as to any information that's available of the seriousness or injury! He is also a very excellent handicapper in his own right. A welcomed replacement during Trevors well deserved time off!

Frank is a great stand-in, and stand-up comedian! Why no mention in the DRF of Rafael Bejerano's serious spill and injury yesterday?

Fourth different rider in as many starts. That used to raise a red flag to the state vet.
