Minnesota: Transfers help bolster state's stallion ranks

This year’s survey of the Midwest stallion market and the corresponding broodmare population reflects the pragmatic attitude regional breeders have adopted since the nation’s economic downturn that preceded the 2009 breeding season. While returns at the major Thoroughbred sales this year are registering increases compared with the last several years, stallion and mare populations in the Midwest have remained constant, even in states where purses are supplemented by added gaming revenue.

Minnesota’s horsemen continue in their annual pursuit at the capitol of added gaming, but it is the presence of Canterbury Park’s card parlor that has allowed the track to continue in its 18th year since reopening under its present management. The state’s mare population continued its six-year decline, with just 164 mares bred to stallions in the state in 2011.

Demidoff led the state’s stallion rankings for the fourth time since 2006, having produced $476,350 in progeny earnings last year. Now 22, Demidoff, a full brother to Gone West, stands at Cross Creek Farm in Buffalo for a $2,500 fee.

Following the deaths of Ghazi and Supremo, several stallions were transferred to Minnesota to bolster the local stallion ranks. Arguably the most accomplished of these imports is Joey Franco, a winner of five stakes, including the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap. A son of Avenue of Flags, Joey Franco will stand at Osborne Farm in Cambridge for a private fee. Osborne Farm will also stand Brave Victory for his first season at stud. The stakes-placed son of Lion Heart stands for $1,500.

Also transferring to Minnesota this season is Magic Cat, a son of Storm Cat who will stand for $1,000 at the Benz Lake Farm in Stillwater.
