Mineshaft honored in New York


Mineshaft, last year's Horse of the Year, has been named the winner of the Secretariat Award by the New York Turf Writers Association.

The Secretariat Award, as well as five other awards from the writers, will be presented Aug. 23 at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Joe Hirsch, former Daily Racing Form executive columnist, was recognized with the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Award, and Funny Cide, last year's champion 3-year-old male, earned the Presidents' Award. Trainer Bobby Frankel and jockey Jerry Bailey are co-recipients of the C.V. Whitney Award for outstanding achievement. Funny Cide's rider, Jose Santos, won the Red Smith "Good Guy" Award, and trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez earned the Fourstardave Award for their record 2003 seasons in Saratoga.
