Mindy's Island drops in 2nd 2006 start

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - After a solid third against open allowance company in his first race of the year, Mindy's Island drops in class to face first-level allowance company in Sunday's featured seventh race at 5 1/2 furlongs here at Assiniboia Downs.

Trained by Sylvester Oliverre, Mindy's Island won 2 of 3 races against claimers late last season after coming here from Fort Erie.

She faces Accidental Magic and Steel's Lad, who faced each other at this level in their first start of the year on May 13. Accidental Magic finished third but was placed fifth for causing interference at the start, while Steel's Lad finished fourth and was placed third via the disqualification.

Yard Bird and Whiskey Run make their local debuts. Trained by Jack Robertson, Yard Bird has won two races, both on turf at longer distances. Whiskey Run has also won two races, both against claimers while sprinting at Fort Erie. A 5-year-old son of Whiskey Wisdom, Whiskey Run has been working well for trainer Martin Drexler.

Publicist finished last of seven at this level on May 13. Pops Buddy, who makes his third start in as many weeks, won a maiden claimer last time out. Restricted stakes winner Northrnimprovement, who managed one third-place finish from four starts at this level last year, makes his seasonal debut.

* Two-time restricted stakes winner Dream Extreme looks get her 3-year-old campaign started on the right note in Sunday's third race, a first-level allowance with an optional claiming price of $12,500 for 3-year-old fillies at 5 1/2 furlongs. Also entered are Say Maybe Baby and Lyric Lake, the third-place and fourth-place finishers from last season's Debutante Stakes.
