Millionaire Smart Bid to enter stud at Highcliff in 2013
Millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Smart Bid has been retired and will enter stud in 2013 at Highcliff at Mill Creek Farm in Stillwater, N.Y.
The 6-year-old Smart Strike horse, who raced as a homebred for George Strawbridge, Jr., will stand for a fee of $4,500 when the foal stands and nurses.
Smart Bid won the Grade 2 Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds in 2011, then returned to the track to win the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap this year. The durable runner picked up 10 other stakes wins or placings over five seasons of racing, including runner-up efforts in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes and Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap in 2011.
Smart Bid retires with six wins from 26 career starts and earnings of $1,008,309.
Out of the Grade 3-winning Danzig mare Recording, Smart Bid is a half-brother to Representing, a stakes winner in Switzerland; multiple stakes winner Deal Making; and stakes-placed winner Vanishing. Recording is also the dam of multiple graded stakes producer Screening.
