Millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Smart Bid has been retired and will enter stud in 2013 at Highcliff at Mill Creek Farm in Stillwater, N.Y. The 6-year-old Smart Strike horse, who raced as a homebred for George Strawbridge, Jr., will stand for a fee of $4,500 when the foal stands and nurses.Smart Bid won the Grade 2 Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds in 2011, then returned to the track to win the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap this year. The durable runner picked up 10 other stakes wins or placings over five seasons of racing, including runner-up efforts in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes and Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap in 2011. Smart Bid retires with six wins from 26 career starts and earnings of $1,008,309. Out of the Grade 3-winning Danzig mare Recording, Smart Bid is a half-brother to Representing, a stakes winner in Switzerland; multiple stakes winner Deal Making; and stakes-placed winner Vanishing. Recording is also the dam of multiple graded stakes producer Screening.
