Mile better distance for 'Chancy'

PORTLAND, Ore. - Chancy Chancy will concede from four to 10 pounds to five rivals in Saturday's Sea Champagne Invitational Handicap, a one-mile race for fillies and mares at Portland Meadows.

Chancy Chancy, a 6-year-old from the barn of trainer Dave Runyon, will carry high weight of 122 pounds while seeking her fourth win at the meeting. Chancy Chancy won the mile City of Roses Handicap here in December, then scored back-to-back wins over invitational handicap runners at 1 1/16 miles and $8,000 claimers at a mile in January. She is coming off a ninth-place finish behind Bullishdemands in the six-furlong Sweetheart Stakes on Feb. 11, but Chancy Chancy has never been at her best sprinting. Regular rider Clark Jones has the mount.

Foxy Jenny may have the best chance to upset under Kay Martz at 115 pounds. The 7-year-old

Foxy Jenny, trained by Nancy Klapatch, finished a good second to Chancy Chancy on Jan. 28, then came back to finish second, beaten just a length by Untamed Dancer, in a one-mile allowance on Feb. 27. Foxy Jenny, a stretch-runner, will have her best chance if another rival pushes the front-running Chancy Chancy through fast fractions.

Wice O Kat and Youcanbegold would seem the most likely candidates to take on Chancy Chancy early. Both have flashed good early speed on occasion. Our Girl Pearl and Wine at Dawn, both closers, complete the field.
