Migliore breaks leg

Jockey Richard Migliore suffered a broken left leg during an accident in the paddock at Belmont Park on Thursday, and he will miss the Breeders' Cup, according to his agent, Maurice Farias.

Migliore was scheduled to ride Artie Schiller in the Breeders' Cup Mile and Nothing but Fun in the Distaff. Migliore was also sitting on several live mounts for Saturday's New York Showcase program at Belmont.

Migliore, 41, was aboard Tactical Rhythm in Thursday's fourth race. In the paddock, a fractious Trippi's Storm got loose from his handlers and was running at Tactical Rhythm, who spooked. Migliore's left ankle got caught in the stirrups as he tried to get off the horse and he fell. Migliore was taken from the paddock by stretcher and then was taken to North Shore University Hospital.

This is the second straight year that Migliore has been involved in an accident before the Breeders' Cup. Last year, two days before the Cup, Migliore was injured in the gate. Although he injured his right wrist, he said he felt well enough to ride Artie Schiller in the Mile and Bwana Charlie in the Sprint.

After he rode those horses, Migliore was found to have a broken wrist and a fractured rib. He missed the last two months of the year.
