Darley has retired former juvenile champion Midshipman, winner of 5 of 8 lifetime starts.
The 4-year-old last ran at the Meydan racecourse in Dubai, winning by more than three lengths on Feb 25. Midshipman arrived back in the United States in April, but a recurring soft-tissue injury kept him away from the races. Darley announced his retirement on Tuesday.
Robert and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable bred Midshipman and raced him early in his career. But he was part of a package deal when the McNairs sold virtually all of their assets to Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum in September 2008. Midshipman’s first race for Maktoum’s Darley Stable was at the 2008 Breeders’ Cup, where he sealed his championship bid with a victory in the Juvenile.

MR. PADRE has two fast-pace routes under his belt this meet, and is sitting on a maiden win in his sixth career start. He set fast fractions two back and finished second; last out he and his pace rival sped six lengths clear of the field, battled to midstretch then weakened to third. Now he draws an inside post, and gets a 10-pound weight break under apprentice Kieber Coa. Obvious choice, most likely winner on card. RON BURGUNDY finished a closing fifth as a first-time gelding in a decent comeback.
