Meow Wow must face invader

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Two $30,000 division of the CTHS Sales Stakes for 2-year-olds at six furlongs highlight the holiday Monday here at Assiniboia Downs.

Meow Wow figures best in the fillies division. Trained by Randy Gray, Moew Wow defeated maiden claimers in her debut before running a solid second in the restricted Frank Arnason Sire Stakes. Most recently, Meow Wow was a well-beaten fourth in a first-level allowance on Aug. 24.

Verdot ships here from Alberta, and will run for trainer Doug Mustard for the first time. In her last race, Verdot won her second start over maiden claimers at Northlands Park. Richard Mangalee, who was up for both her starts, will ride.

Bella Mariella finished third, a length behind Meow Wow in the Frank Arnason. She will add Lasix for her second start on Monday, and has been working steadily in preparation for this race.

Kali's Spell has finished a close second against maidens claimers in her last two starts.

Also entered are the maiden Saucy Smile and the first-time starters Still Flying and Purrmissable.

Custody Battle, trained by Chad Torevell, is the only winner in the colts and gelding division. He was a gate-to-wire winner against maiden claimers in his latest. Tim Gardiner, who rode Custody Battle in his first two starts, replaces Chris Husbands, who rode the horse in his last race.

Eight by Ten and Vinegar Jim finished second and third in the same maiden special weight race last time out.

Trainer Blair Miller sends out Battlestation and Naughty Thoughts. Battlestation, who finished fourth in the Frank Arnason last time out, has a pair of bullet works leading up to this race, four furlongs in 48.80 on Aug. 28, and five furlongs out of the gate on Aug. 22 in 101.80. Chris Husbands will ride. Naughty Thoughts has followed the same work pattern as Battlestation.

Also entered are the maidens Storm Mecca, Sure Luck Holmes, and Dust de Gold.

The annual Manitoba Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society yearling sale starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Assiniboia Downs grandstand.
