Mellow Fellow wins fifth straight

ALBANY, Calif. - Mellow Fellow made a bid for Horse of the Meeting honors as he won his fifth straight race and second stakes, capturing the $61,125 at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday.

Mellow Fellow let Tony's Royalty cut out a fast early pace of 21.19 and 43.55 before making his patented wide move into the lane. He won the six-furlong race by 6.5 lengths over Tony's Royalty in 1:08.66 as he won for the fourth time during the current meeting. His career record is 10 wins, four seconds and three thirds in 23 starts with $307,263 in earnings.

"I wasn't worried about the leaders at all because I know when he kicks it in, he's going to run them down whether they're stopping or not," winning jockey Russell Baze said.

Beyond Brilliant finished fourth in his comeback.

"I was surprised how tired he got because he was training well," Beyond Brilliant's rider Ron Warren Jr. said. "The track was a little loose, and I didn't want to beat him up late."
