Mellow Fellow scores by a nose in Gin Rummy Champ

Mellow Fellow got up for a nose win Saturday in the Gin Rummy Champ at Gulfstream Park West.

Mellow Fellow was up for a nose win over Full Moon’s Back in the $90,000 Gin Rummy Champ at Gulfstream Park West on Saturday. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Moonwalker.

Mellow Fellow ($38) raced in eighth for much of the five-furlong turf sprint run on good ground, as Choctaw Chuck set a pressured pace of 21.47 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.92 for the half-mile. Mellow Fellow made up ground on the leaders in the stretch before winning in 57.16 seconds.

Rodney Soodeen was aboard for trainer Tim Richardson.

Mellow Fellow now has won 6 of 26 starts and $198,314. He is a 4-year-old son of The Cliff’s Edge, and he was bred in Kentucky by his owner, Ripplewood Farm.

Its called he was up against sprinters in a shorter race.. he had more endurance so it was taken advantage of. If he would have faught for the lead early he would have finished flat instead of "confusing" you. Also he won 5 going longer and "running off". Watch him at keeneland going wire to wire with no shoes and allow the confusion to continue.

I don't get it!? They've been putting him in Stakes races that are too long for him, he goes out to the front, basically a run-off for 7f-a mile, then everyone passes him in the lane...now someone finally wises up and puts him in a turf sprint stakes, and I'm thinking great, he should be able to hold...and he drops back to 8th and comes running at the end?!!? what the ----? I mean, I'm glad he won, just terribly confused about it
