Mellow Fellow: Golden Gate's best


ALBANY, Calif. - Mellow Fellow, who won all four of his starts at the 2001-2002 Golden Gate Fields meet, including the Montclair and Danville handicaps, won three awards for the meeting.

A 7-year-old gelding, Mellow Fellow was voted the horse of the meeting, top older horse, and top sprinter. Mellow Fellow, owned by Ronelle Heller and his trainer, William J. Morey Jr., has won 10 of 23 career starts and $307,283.

Danthebluegrassman was voted the top 3-year-old colt or gelding as well as the top 3-year-old. His nose victory over Cappuchino in the Golden Gate Derby was voted the race of the meeting.

Other winners were Janet, top older filly or mare; Decarchy, top turf horse; Geana Dawn, top claimer; and Halo Tyra, top 3-year-old filly.

Russell Baze, who won his 24th jockey title, and Jerry Hollendorfer, who won his 22nd straight training title, were named top jockey and trainer. Kevin Krigger, who finished fifth in the standings with 54 victories despite arriving late and serving 25 suspension days, was voted best apprentice.
