ALTOONA, Iowa – Jockey David Mello collected his 1000th career win Saturday night when he guided the Iowa-bred gelding Voodooville to a three-length victory in a six-furlong claiming event. Trained by Chris Richard for owner Maggi Moss, two of Mello's staunchest supporters, Voodooville scored for the first time this campaign while covering the distance in 1:11.06. Mello, who won the riding title here in 2013 and holds a commanding 81-59 lead over his closest pursuer, Alex Birzer, this season, is enjoying the finest year of his 12-year career with 117 wins from just 569 rides. The 29-year-old Rhode Island native is closing in on his own Thoroughbred meet record of 99 wins.
