Megahertz gives Frankel stakes milestone

ARCADIA, Calif. - Megahertz won the eighth stakes of her career in Saturday's $147,000 at Santa Anita, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel his 100th career stakes win at the track's winter-spring meeting and his seventh victory in the San Gorgonio, a turf stakes for fillies and mares.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Megahertz ($3.20) rallied from last in a field of four to win by a length over pacesetter Garden in the Rain. Megahertz finished 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:49.51.

Solis said he was not concerned with the slow pace of 25.51 and 51.08 seconds. He brought Megahertz wide on the final turn and they took the lead in the final furlong. "I don't think there are many horses in America that have that kind of kick for a quarter-mile," Solis said. "I had so much confidence in her."

Garden in the Rain finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of Firth of Lorne, who outfinished Mer de Corail by a head. Tropical Blossom was a raceday scratch.

The Grade 2 San Gorgonio was Megahertz's first start since a fifth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf over this course in October. Owned by Michael Bello, Megahertz, 5, has won 9 of 23 starts and $1,249,094. Last year, she won two stakes in a seven-race campaign - the Grade 2 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Mabee/Ramona Handicap at Del Mar.

Frankel said that Megahertz would remain in training this year.
