Meet Mr. Prospector's final crop

Email

LAS VEGAS - Mr. Prospector died in 1999 at age 29, and while most stallions are retired from stud long before that age, Mr. Prospector was still going. His last crop of foals, born in 2000, race this year.

Speed is a coveted trait in a stallion, and Mr. Prospector had it in spades. He was by the 1963 2-year-old champion Raise a Native, a flashy son of Native Dancer who was undefeated in only four career starts. Raise a Native, from the same crop as Northern Dancer, rose to the top of the stallion ranks with such notable sons as Majestic Prince and Alydar. Mr. Prospector, from same crop as Secretariat, may have been Raise a Native's fastest offspring. As a 3-year-old, Mr. Prospector set a six-furlong track record at Gulfstream Park (1:07.80), and at 4, he set a six-furlong track record at Garden State Park (1:08.60) in the Whirlaway Handicap.

While he was expected to become a good sire of sprinters, Mr. Prospector surprisingly became one of the greatest stallions in history. Although synonymous with speed, many of his runners handled classic distances. His runners won sprinting, routing, on dirt, wet tracks and turf, giving him international appeal.
