The Jockey Club of Canada on Tuesday announced its finalists for 2005 Sovereign Award media honors. The Sovereign Awards gala will be Dec. 16.

Three finalists were selected in four categories - feature story, newspaper article, photograph, and film/video/broadcast.

Jennifer Morrison will be looking for her third Sovereign Award in the feature story category. Her submission, "Out of the Woods," appeared in The Blood-Horse last December.

Paul Wiecek of the Winnipeg Free Press, who won the feature award in 2003 and the newspaper award in 2003 and 2004, is nominated in both categories. Rob Longley of The Toronto Sun and Beverley Smith of The Globe and Mail are the other newspaper finalists. Peter Gross rounds out the feature list for a piece that appeared in The Game.

Michael Burns Jr. is nominated for his photo "Snowy end to 2004 Woodbine season," published in The Game in January. He has won the award five times.

The other photography finalists are David Landry (Canadian Thoroughbred) and Joe Bryska (Winnipeg Free Press).

The three film/video/broadcast finalists are "Life & Times of Northern Dancer," CBC television; "Riders," The Score television; and Horse Racing Alberta & White Iron Productions.
