Medellin rides eight winners in two days

Leading rider Alejandro Medellin padded his lead in the jockey standings with a big weekend at Sunland Park.

Medellin booted home four winners on Saturday - Dont Ask Why ($23.20), Perrys Queen Bug ($12.40), Sincy's Wonder ($3), and He's Thorny ($4). He added another four-bagger on Sunday with Adelita's Gold ($4.80), Tricky Deeds ($5.40), Crowning Victory ($5.80), and Bound to Be ($5.20) to bring his number of wins in the Thoroughbred division of the meeting to 54.

Following Monday's dark day, Medellin was shut out on Tuesday's card but still leads five-time Sunland riding champ Ken Tohill by seven victories.

w Super Danny sprinted out to the early lead in last Sunday's Phase II of the Sunland Park claiming series and did not look back. He held Sunny Topper safe by a half-length in 1:09.70 for six furlongs. The 6-year-old Super Danny picked up $19,575 and has now won 10 of 16 starts for trainer Dennis Hall.

Despite also winning Phase I of the series for $8,000 to $10,000 claimers on Jan. 31, Super Danny was dismissed at 5-1 on Sunday under regular rider Martin Bourdieu. He is expected to return for Phase III of the series on April 5. The third leg carries a $35,000 purse.
