Meche denied license

Jockey Donnie Meche, who this spring was suspended a year for failing to do his best to win a trial race at Delta Downs, had his request for a license renewal denied Monday by the Louisiana Racing Commission. His license expired June 30.

Meche, who was granted a stay from the suspension in a district court in June, had sought a license from Louisiana Downs stewards on July 3, but they recommended he not be granted one at that time. He took his case to the commission, and after testimony was heard, was denied in a 4-2 vote Monday.

Meche's options include legal action or another hearing before the commission, which likely will not meet again until December.

Meche was suspended six months by Delta stewards in February after favorite Cleaning House finished third in a trial for the Graduation Futurity. The suspension was increased to a year by the commission in an April decision.

Meche has said that Cleaning House injured his hoof when he stumbled at the start of the trial.
